We kick off our fourth season with Polyphonic Bonsai’s third annual Halloween spectacular!
The Plays
We'll present two original, holiday-appropriate one-act plays. The first, DON'T OPEN THE DOOR, was written as an homage to the slasher films of the 1970s. On the eve of Halloween 1976, police discover that an apparently childish prank actually announces a serial killer’s intentions to terrorize a quiet neighborhood. Over the course of their investigation, retired Detective Doug Trusler tries to convince his former colleagues that this killer is the vengeful ghost of Richard Randell, a little trick-or-treater years earlier whose pleas the neighbors ignored while teenagers tormented him until a car accidentally killed him. Tortured by guilt and dismissed as a lunatic, Trusler takes it upon himself to save the community, only to realize that he’s made matters worse at the play’s climactic close as he stares into The Darkness itself.
The next, EVEREST ONE, is our first foray into science fiction! In the year 2071, astronaut Lieutenant Max Aibek awakes in the airlock of his space ship, the Everest One. An unexplained nuclear explosion has taken the lives of his fellow crew members. His only link to the outside is through the airlock's emergency intercom system. Over the intercom, he hears the voice of astronaut Admiral Joe Cupertino from the International Space Station 2. Max and Joe, two astronauts thousands of miles apart, must work together to figure out how the Everest One exploded, what caused it, and if anyone is in range to rescue Max in time. With each breath Max takes, the Carbon Dioxide level in the airlock rises. Suspicions also arise as spectrometical evidence suggests that the blast might have been intentional.
